1950-51 Foreign Fellowships Available for Grad Students

Fellowship opportunities for the academic year of 1950-51 will be available in Czechoslovakia, England, France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Switzerland, and Latin American according to on announcement by the Institute of International Studies.

The stipends offered in these instances are open to students who hold bachelor degrees from American colleges or universities or who are graduates of professional schools of recognized standing.

In addition, they must be able to read, write, and speak the language of the country in which they plan to study, as well as be able to produce proof of American citizenship. They must also have good academic records, good moral character and adaptability, and good health.

Cover Living Costs

In most cases the grants cover living expenses, and, as a rule, tuition expenses are waived.

The 10 stipends available from Czechoslovakia are for the study of music and art in Prague, Brno, and Bratislavia, the five grants from Ruskin College, Oxford are for the study of labor relations. Applicants must be active members of a labor union to be eligible for the latter.

For appointments in France and for the Germanistic Society awards, applicants must be unmarried and remain unmarried for the tenure of the award.

Three fellowships for graduate study from the Netherlands are open to graduate students, preferably under 28 years of age. Some knowledge of the Dutch language is desirable, but not a prerequisite.

The Swiss universities, the Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich, and the School of Economics and Public Administration in St. Gallen offer tuition grants which can be supplemented by stipends given by universities and Swiss societies.

It is expected that the Italian government will offer six fellowships, each for living expenses and tuition for study at government institutions during the academic year November through July. Open for men only are two grants providing maintenance in Pisa and tuition fee at the University of Pisa.

The Pan American World Airways. System offers 25 fellowships covering round-trip transportation only, from a United States terminal of PAA to a tormnal in the country of study.

Deadlines

In most cases the deadlines for applications are April 1, though in a few instances somewhat earlier.
