Radcliffe Appeals For Dorm Permit

Radcliffe officials will go before the Cambridge Board of Appeals a week from today to obtain a permanent permit for 55 Garden St.

The College's petition to use the former one-family house as a permanent dormitory was vetoed by Building Inspector Stephen R. Spencer, who claims that city zoning laws limit the Garden St. section to single and two-family dwellings.

55 Garden St. has served as a temporary dormitory under two-year permits granted to the College by the Cambridge Building Commission since 1945. The last expired in 1949.

Should the Board of Appeals deny the College's petition for a permanent permit, 19 sophomores and juniors may have to vacate the dwelling.

Gilman House, another Radcliffe "off-campus" house, is also operating under a temporary permit, which will expire next year.
