Acheson Calls Charge Against Shapley False

NO WRITER ATTRIBUTED

Harlow Shapley, director of the College Observatory, was indirectly defended by Secretary of State Dean Acheson yesterday against charges made by Senator Joseph R. McCarthy (R-Wis.) February 12.

Acheson said there was no truth in any of the charges about Communist influence in the State Department leveled in McCarthy's Rene, Nevada, speech. McCarthy had mentioned Shapley as a "person with Communist connections," and Shapley that same day called McCarthy's statement a "slanderous lie."
