Varsity Fencers Will Meet Army; '53 Faces Clark University, Names Jertson Captain

Absence of a key foil man will weaken the varsity fencers when they face a strong Army team at 2 p.m. today in the Blockhouse. Joe Vera injured a ligament in his left leg Thursday night while competing in Amateur Fencing League matches in Boston and will be out of action today.

He will not know until Monday how long he will be away from competition. Chris Martin will replace Vera in the starting lineup.

Vera's left leg buckled on a recovery from a lunge during a match. This is the fourth time that he has seriously injured his left leg.

Freshman fencers meet the Clark varsity in Worcester at 1 p.m. today. The '53 squad yesterday chose Jan Earl Jertson of Thayer Hall and Fairhaven as their captain.

Jertson fenced two years ago on the J.V. at Exeter. Last year he fenced informally when the Academy did not have a regular team. In last week's freshman match with Andover, Jertson swept all three of his matches, accounting for half of the Crimson's score in its 12 to 6 loss.

The varsity lineup:

Foils: Frankmann, Sollee, Martin; Epee: Overholser, Morton, Smith; Saber: Carter, Gay, Levine, Pierce.
