Dramas, Dances, and Parties Mark House Celebrations of Yule Season

Two Houses, Adams and Dunster, celebrated the Yuletide last night with their annual Christmas parties, plays, and dances. Lowell has its event scheduled for Wednesday, Winthrop, Thursday, Kirkland and Leverett, Friday, and Eliot on Monday, December 18.

After linen tablecloths and napkins had been cleared from the Adams House dining hall, Gerrick's "The Lying Valet" was presented under the direction of Robert F. Metzdorr, resident fellow, and Seymour O. Simches, instructor in Romance Languages.

Four Wilder Sketches

Dunster's formal dance was proceeded by Thornton Wilder's series of "four sketches," "On the House" with Gaynor F. Bradish '52 and David R. Jefferson '53 as directors. Parietal rules were extended until 9:45 p.m.

Lowell House will present "The Relapse, or Virtue in Danger," by Sir John Vanbrugh, on Wednesday night, honoring President Lowell's birthday. Lowell's party and dance will begin at 8:30 p.m. tonight.

Henry Fielding's "The Justice Caught in His Own Trap, or Rape Upon Rape" will be the Winthrop production on Thursday and is directed by Rufus A. Blanchard, teaching fellow in English.

On Friday Kirkland will present "The Town Fop, Sir Timothy Tawdry," directed by Herbert L. Kleinfield; and Leverett will present Farquahar's "The Recruiting Officer." Mrs. Mark deWolf How will director the Leverett production. with Thomas B. Bardos '52, Gwilyn S. Brown '51, Mark L. Goodman '53, and Christopher Hodgman '52 in the leading roles.

Eliot will continue in the House's Christmas tradition of Restoration drama with its production of Ben Jonson's "Every Man in His Humour." Robert H. Chapman, instructor in English, will direct a cast of both faculty and students.

All House Christmas parties are open only to House members and are free of charge--paid for by House dues. Dances are subject to charges covering orchestra fees. Parietal rules are extended at the discretion of the Housemasters in accord with the usual observance of 15 minutes-before-the-dance deadline.

The production was "The Lying Valet," David Garrick's Restoration farce. The other play, "On the House," was given at Dunster. "It contained a series of four sketches based on plays of Thornton Wilder, Norton Professor of Poetry, and arranged with his cooperation.
