Tech to Expand GE Requirement

M.I.T.'s faculty last week approved a new humanities schedule which will make Tech's General Education set-up very much like Harvard's. The program, which goes into effect next September, was spelled out in two new study requirements.

In the freshman and sophomore years, men will have to take four required half courses in Humanities and Social Sciences. These courses, which must be taken in sequence, are designed as a foundation for more intensive study in the third and fourth years.

Electives in Last Two Years

Then, in the junior and senior years, students must choose a minimum of four elective half courses in Humanities and Social Sciences. The minimum of four courses in these areas may be extended, but not to more than six.

Presently enrolled students will have to conform to the new system, but with modifications outlined by a committee now studying the problem. Some men will be excused altogether on submitting petitions.

Tech's old G. E. program required undergraduates to take two terms of Humanities and a General Education course.
