Conney Weiland, Harvard's third new major sport coach in a year, will make his debut and open the hockey season as well, when he sends his team against M.I.T. in the Garden tonight. Faccoff time in 9 p.m.
Weiland, who has called his team "set to go," has had difficulty naming a definite starting lineup. It was not until after yesterday's early morning workout that he picked sophomore Nate Corning as the starting goalie.
And it is still uncertain just which defensive pair will start in front of Corning. Weiland has split the Dusty Burke-Bill Bliss combination; putting Burke with Jack carman, and Blies with Harry Sedgwick. But the former Bruin star isn't quite sure yet which pair will open the game.
Though weiland ahs called the forward situation "flexible," his offense is pretty well set. Joe Kittredge centers the first attack, with Captain Lew Preston and Hal Marshall at left and right wings. Kittredge, who has one of the hardest shots on the team, has looked especially good in practies.
Reserve Lines
One-time football players John White and Bob DiBlasio are center and left wing on the second line with Nat Harris; sophomores Walt Greeley and Amory Hubbard team with Doug Anderson on the third.
Forwards usually have an easy time against Tech. Last year the Crimson won, 10 to 5; this year the Engineers, minus three key graduated players, lost 6 to 1, to Tufts in their only game.
Despite appearances, Tech coach Ben Martin has improved the sometimes weak defense. Veteran goalie Burt Woodward is a fixture. He has shown flashed of brilliance, and made 40 saves against Tufts. Howie Anderson and Bill Pinkham are better than average on the back line.
Martin has had great difficulty forming an effective offense: the Engineers took less than ten shots against Tufts. Right wing Paul Grady, Martin's top forward, was injured in that game, and may not play.
