Sprinkler system pipes broke in the north entry of Thayer Hall at 11:45 p.m. last night and flooded the first floor and cellar with six inches of water.
Cambridge firemen answered the automatic alarm by sending 15 firemen, the 78-foot hook and ladder truck, one pump truck, and two emergency cars. The firehouse is located 100 yards across the street from Thayer.
Fire Chief Reports
Students managed to keep most of the water in the hallway by stuffing towels and laundry under the door jams, with the more fortunate rooms getting only about a half inch of water.
Captain Edward F. Caldwell of the Fire Department said that very rarely do the sprinkler tappets burst without being melted by fire or snapped by force.
Building and Grounds authorities described the damage as "negligible," reporting that the sprinkler system was again in operation. No personal property damage was reported by room occupants.
