The combined Harvard-Radcliffe Glee Clubs sang two carols on the State House steps last night as Boston opened its week-long Christmas Festival. They performed Bach's "Break Forth O Beauteous Heavenly Light," and Billings' "A Virgin Unspotted."
Despite the cold and wind, a sizable crowd gathered near the Common to hear speeches, hymns, and carols from many lands performed by Boston ethnic groups, some of whom were in costume.
Governor Dever, interrupted by fire sirens and squeaks from the loud speaker, told the gathering that, in spite of the war we should not forget our greater duties to God and the teachings of Christ.
Most of the people left the exercises early to view the unveiling of the Nativity scene across the street in the Common.
The group was led by Elizabeth Menzoil '51 in the first number, while Hewitt Pantalconi '58 conducted the second.
The M.I.T Brass Choir was among the other groups that appeared; they opened the evening's program with two numbers.
