Over three million dollars were received by the University during July, August, and September, President Conant's office announced last night.
The largest gift--$902,000--came from the estate of Edward S. Harkness, who helped pay for the Houses during his lifetime. Like most of the other large gifts formally received, the Harkness donation had been previously publicized.
More than one-third of the $3,041,945.32 total was contributed without restriction as to use. The Business School--which just finished its drive to match John D. Rockefeller's $5,000,000 conditional gift--received the most of any school in restricted gifts--$679,000.
The General Electric Company gave the school $307.000 to establish the Charles E. Wilson Professorship in Business Policy. The gift honors the 50 years service with G.E. of Wilson who was this week named head of the Office of Defense Mobilization.
A $250,000 contribution to the Business School by the Kresge Foundation will go towards the endowment of a student center at the school. The gift is part of the $2,000,000 donation announced last July, most of which will be needed for the construction of the center.
Other large gifts to the University include $166,000 from the estate of Allston Burr '89.
