Political love-play without reaching a climax of action is not an effective way for the American liberal to further his professed principles, Arthur M. Schlesinger, Jr. '38, associate professor of History, told a meeting in Lamont Forum Room last night.

Schlesinger, who debated with Charles R. Cherington '35, associate professor of Government, on the subject, "Americans for Democratic Action-Pro and Con," said further that the exigencies of the era make leisurely discussion impossible and decisive action imperative.

Cherington emphasized that A.D.A. required that the liberal accept a "package deal" with opinions already thought out for him. He said that it is rather the duty of the liberal to think about issues and come to his own conclusions. He added that as a discussion group and rallying point for liberal thought, A.D.A. would serve a much needed purposes.
