Eliot clinched the House football championship yesterday for the second consecutive year with a 6 to 0 victory ever Lowell. The touchdown came on a desperation pass with five seconds remaining in the game.
Stopped deep in Lowell territory on three previous occasions, the Elephants took over the hall on downs on the Bellboy 25 with 38 seconds left to play. After two passes had failed, Eliot quarterback Charlie Cabot passed to end Myles Herter in the corner of the end zone for the game's only score as the clock ran out. The extra point attempt failed.
Lowell outplayed favored Eliot throughout most of the game. The hard-charging Bellboy line caused Eliot to lose the ball on fumbles four times, twice in scoring territory.
Bellboys Dominate First Half
During the first half, Lowell dominated the play, driving to the Elephants' seven yard line early in the second quarter. The key play in the march, which covered 70 yards, was a 25-yard pass from quarterback Bob Lown to tailback Ted Briggs. Lowell lost the ball on downs after two line bucks and two passes failed to make the necessary yardage.
Late in the period, Eliot moved to the Lowell one-foot line after a pass interference penalty had put the ball on the Bellboy 20. With one foot to go for a score, Cabot fumbled on an attempted quarterback sneak and linebacker Archie Southgate recovered for Lowell on the two.
During most of the third and fourth periods the two teams battled around midfield. Eliot moved into scoring position late in the quarter when halfback John MacNamara broke loose for 35 yards to the Lowell 20. The Bellboys held for downs, but could gain only five yards themselves. The ball reverted to Eliot at that point, from which the scoring pass was thrown.
