Jasko Mikkola's cross-country runners have their work cut out for them this afternoon when they face heavily-favored Yale and Princeton at Princeton in their third triangular meet. The harriers are seeking their third victory in four attempts.
"If they run with the same guts as they did last weekend against Dartmouth, they'll do well," Mikkola said yesterday, "but both Yale and Princeton have championship teams." The Crimson ran only twice this week, but the freshmen showed much improvement, especially among the third, fourth, and fifth men.
Elis on Streak
The Eli varsity harriers boast one of the best records in the East, with five straight victories. Ted Mearns, Yale captain, has been breaking records all season, and is backed by a strong team including Bob Johnson, Emery Reeves, Roland Garefalo, and Warren Clifford. If comparative scores mean anything, the Elis should win easily--they have never scored more than 20 points, and defeated Brown by 16. The Crimson lost to Brown, 34 to 45. Both beat Dartmouth by approximately the same score.
The Tigers, racing at home, are expected to take second behind Yale. Captain Ted Snedeker is rated with Mearns as one of the best runners in the Ivy League, and coach Matty Geis can count on Al Pittis, Ed Fowler, and Bruce Macomber to follow close behind.
John Pankey, Crimson captain, Dave Gregory, Dave Cairns, Dick White, Paul Judy, Al Master, Clark Coggeshall, Ted Scudder, Owen Edmonds, Steve Sharp, Goodie Cooke, and John Kimball will run for the varsity.
The freshman team, which Mikkola says "has a good chance to do a good job," consists of Emil San Soucie, Hubert Maguire, Hal Gerry, Bruce Phillips Leo Carroll, Ed MacInnes, Jack Richards, Dick Van Duyne, Bill Engs, Paul Grinner, a newcomer this week and Bob McConaghie.
