A new Radcliffe dorm, Daniel Henry Holmes Hall, will soon be built to satisfy the increased demand on the admission office, President Jordan revealed in his annual report to the trustees. The building will be paid for with funds from the Miss Georgianne Holmes Thomas bequest.
The report, issued this week, revealed that the Annex is now faced with so many applications for admission that they cannot be filled on the basis of the quality of student records alone.
According to Jordan, many desirable applicants were lost because prospective students from the Boston area were not assured of dormitory space.
If a qualitative basis were followed today, the report claimed, 85 percent of the student body would require dormitory accomodations.
Jordan also hailed the final phase of joint instruction, stating that the only classes held separately today are those in which the professors prefer not to merge for academic reasons.
In the statement, Jordan announced that the Annex had closed the fiscal year with a modest surplus. This was made possible through the donation of $750,000 in new endowments and unrestricted funds.
Gifts such as these, said Jordan, are "the central asset of any college . . . they must be constantly nurtured in these difficult days."
