Past performances do not indicate that the jayvee football team will add another win to its one-and-six record this afternoon, when the Elis bring a fast backfield and a fair line onto the junior varsity field at 2 p.m.
Against the only mutual opponent, Yale toppled Dartmouth's jayvee squad by a lone touchdown while Harvard bowed to the Green, 38 to 0.
Fast backs on opposing teams have caused trouble for Norm Shepard's squad all fall, slicing off large gains over tackle and around end almost at will. The Crimson linebacking, however, has suffered most when an opponent has had a pass offense that required constant watching; but the regular Eli quarterback and top passer, Eddie Ryan, moved up to the varsity several weeks ago.
Wilson Probable Starter
Since that time Coach Gib Holgate has experimented with Bill McCandless, who played on last year's team, and Bill Wilson in the ball-handling position. Wilson, who formerly went both ways in the left halfback slot, will probably be the starting quarterback today. The Yale jayvees run from both the T and single-wing.
Bob Martineau will take over Wilson's old post and the very fast Charlie Haase will play at right half. At fullback, Ronnie LaMarre will probably play ahead of the man he has been alternating with, John DeWysocki. DeWysocki is the heavier of the two, but the 165-pound LaMarre is fast and a very shifty runner. Three weeks ago he broke away on a line play for a long run through the entire Dartmouth team for the winning touchdown.
If they come up with any degree of effective passing today, the Elis have a very capable offensive end in co-Captain Rusty Wirth. The other co-captain, 145-pound Kill Church, has proved himself an outstanding defensive end.
Bill Monteith has shown steady improvement in the quarterbacking role for the Crimson. His passing, while far from great, has been effective behind the protection of a distinctly mediocre line. Lou Tsavaris, the lone breakaway threat in the backfield, suffered a leg injury in Wednesday's practice but may be ready. Tsavaris and Art French have proved very able at breaking up enemy passes.
