Dean Rogers will represent the University next month at a conference in Nice, France, to set up an international association of universities, it was announced yesterday. The meeting will last from December third to ninth.
Delegates from colleges and universities of 70 nations will meet to "promote international cooperation on problems affecting all educators." One of these troubles is the variance from country to country of requirements for academic degrees.
Rogers suggested that an international body of educators might come to exert a considerable moral force in the world on such an issue as academic freedom.
Membership in the conference may constitute a problem, Rogers commented; whether to limit membership to "the great universities of the world" or include other educational institutions. The broader question remains of whether to accept institutions of totalitarian states in the association.
Sixty American institutions have been invited to send representatives to the meeting.
