President Conant was elected Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching yesterday in New York at the foundation's 45th annual meeting.

Conant succeeds University of California President Robert G. Sproul, who presided at the meeting yesterday. Announcement of Conant's election was made by Oliver C. Carmichael, president of the Foundation.

General Dwight D. Eisenhower, president of Columbia, A. Whitney Griswold, president of Yale, and lawyer Alfred Dean were elected as trustees.

Lamont Also Elected

Succeeding Under Secretary of Defense Robert A. Lovett as Investment Committee chairman was Thomas S. Lamont '21, vice-president of J.P. Morgan.

The Carnegie Foundation, established in 1906 by Andrew Carnegie, encourages advancement of fundamental research in fields normally not covered by other agencies, and it has organized its own departments for research in the sciences and history. It also seeks to provide retiring pensions for teachers in the United States, Canada, and Newfoundland.
