Bruins Nip Freshmen, 21-20; Clasby Passing Leads Attack

By Hiller B. Zobel

PROVIDENCE, R.I., November 11--Two mistakes by the freshman football team offset a fine passing display by Captain Dick Clasby and gave Brown's freshman team a 21 to 20 victory over the Yardlings in the Brown Stadium today.

Clasby completed 11 out of 15 passes for 122 yards and two touchdowns, but two second-period Yardlings fumbles near their own 40 yard line set up Brown's first two scores.

The freshmen, playing their best game of the season, worked well from their new single-wing formation Clasby and end Harvey Popell completed a 23-yard pass play to set up the first touchdown. Ted Kennedy scored after making a difficult catch of another Clasby pass at 9:00 of the first period.

After recovering a second-period Crimson fumble on the Harvard 35, Brown's "X-T" attack worked the left side of the freshman line to score in straight plays. Then, on the first play following the kick-off, the Yardlings fumbled again, and again Brown drove for a score.

After an uneventful third quarter, Clasby started passing again, this time to wingback John Tulenko, setting up an end sweep on which he scored a touchdown at 2:04. Tulenko made several flue catches of Clasby passes during the afternoon.

But, again one play after the kickoff, Brown broke loose. Halfback Ken Kessaris, behind good blocking, ran 69 yards to score the last Bruin touchdown. Jim Gerlach then kicked the winning point.

The Yardlings fought back, and with fullback Warren O'Donnell calling signals shrewdly and Clasby passing, scored again on a pass from Clasby to quarterback Tony Calm with 40 seconds to play.
