Dever Rejects Street Debate

Governor Paul A. Dever's campaign managers last night ended Liberal Union hopes that the Governor would appear before the student body on November 3 without Arthur W. Coolidge, his Republican opponent.

Roy F. Gootenberg '49 2PA, graduate Liberal Union representative, said he was told in a telephone conversation with James L. O'Dea, Jr., of the Governor's campaign staff, that six Boston rallies were scheduled for the Governor that night because of inadequate response from the Young Republican Club.

Democratic Campaign Headquarters, Gootenberg stated, called "insulting" Coolidge's offer. The offer, made through the H.Y.R.C., called for a debate with Dever in the Square on a loudspeaker truck as part of Coolidge's "street corner campaign."

"Dean Watson told me anyhow," Gootenberg said, "that the Dena's Office could not allow a public meeting sponsored by College groups in the Square. This makes the Republican offer specious and preposterous."
