Fire Causes Some Damage to Dillon Laundry System

Fire broke out in the laundry room of Dillon Field House early yesterday morning, causing an estimated $1,500 worth of damage to laundry and equipment.

The blaze, discovered shortly after 1:30 a.m. by night watchman Michael J. Lyons, was confined entirely to the laundry room on the ground floor. Most of the loss was to articles of clothing and towels, some of which were scheduled to be used after today's game with Dartmouth.

District Fire Chief Daniel Hagerty stated that the blaze was probably caused by careless disposal of a cigarette.

James V. Farrell, in charge of athletic gear at Dillon, said that University maintenance squads were able to repair damage in time to begin work at the regular hour of 8 a.m.

This fire was not considered a major one; the last major fire at Soldiers Field occurred in the early 1930's when the predecessor of Dillon burned down.
