Undefeated Southern Methodist, winner 42 to 21 over Rice Saturday, was yesterday named top team in the country in the weekly Associated Press football poll.
Army, leader last week, dropped to second place, despite its 49 to 0 trouncing of the varsity. Cornell, which tripped the Crimson, 28 to 7, a week ago, moved up into the Top Ten for the first time. The Big Red was named tenth in the nation, even though it just managed to slip by Yale, 7 to 0.
Besides Cornell, other newcomers to the list were Tennessee (eighth) and Northwestern (ninth). Meanwhile Stanford, Maryland, and Washington dropped out of the charmed circle. All three were defeated Saturday.
S.M.U., in third place last week, has beaten five straight opponents from five different conferences. The Mustangs have defeated Georgia Tech, Ohio State, Missouri, Oklahoma A. and M., and Rice. They have scored 184 points to 61 for their opponents. They are idle this week, resting for the traditional Texas game.
