The Committee on Houses has voted unanimously not to extend room permissions for female guests until midnight on the Yale and Dartmouth weekends, Dean Bender announced ysterday.
At its meeting Wednesday, the committee also declined to recommend any general changes in parietal rules to the Faculty of Arts and Sciences. The group did authorize Housemasters to explore the whole question of entertainment of women guests.
Doan Bender reported that the committee was sympathetic with the aims of the people who want to see room permissions extended, The problem of "simple, inexpensive, decent entertainment" has become more serious over the years, he declared, but the Houses were not originally intended to take care of the demand for entertainment facilities that exists now.
The proposal voted down by the committee was made by the chairmen of the seven House committees, and presented to the Committee on Houses by Henry M. Silveira, Jr. '51, Student Council head.
Faculty Approval Needed
A petition that was being circulated in the Houses calling for an extension of the deadline to 12 midnight every Saturday night was not brought before the committee but will be given to the Student Council for further action. Leonard J. Friedman '51, one of the chairman of the petition drive, claimed last night that it had gained about 2,100 signatures.
Though the Committee on Houses is authorized to make special interpretations of the parietal rules, in specific cases, any general change would have to be approved by the Faculty.
Besides the seven Housemasters, the committee includes Provost Buck, vice-President Reynolds, Dean Bender, Dean Leighton, and Associate Dean Watson.
In previous years, Houses have often slightly relaxed the rules on entertaining women guests on important weekends, but Housemasters contacted last night would not reveal whether they have any such plans for this year.
