Scrimmage Starts Pre-Army Practice

Blitz and Ray Exhibit Some Speed Against Jayvees' Defenses

The emphasis was on speed yesterday as the varsity football squad started preparations for its game with mighty Army in the Stadium Saturday.

After a passing session in which Carroll Lowenstein and Gil O'Neil did most of the work, and a close-range tackling drill. Coach Lloyd Jordan sent his second team against the junior varsity in a 45-minute scrimmage. After that, the third string took over against the jayvees for 15 minutes.

In an effort to find someone who can run the ends and who, once through the line, can spring through the secondary, Jordan devoted considerable attention to sophomore Jerry Blitz and Bobby Ray. The scrimmage was spent entirely on running, and Blitz and Ray did the major portion of that.

Blitz broke away for numerous long gains and Ray exhibited some hard running.

There were no serious injuries on Saturday, only the customary bruises. Bob Stargel was still limping yesterday and Red Wylie is definitely out of the Army game. Hank Rate, first string defensive end, dove for a pass in yesterday's practice, came down on his stomach, and had to leave the field. The extent of his injury if any is not yet known.

Army incurred no injuries in defeating Michigan, 27 to 6, last Saturday. Its 44-man travelling squad is scheduled to pull in at Back Bay-at 2:20 p.m. Friday.
