Eliot Eleven Defeats Winthrop; Leverett Shuts Out Adams, 13-0

Two long touchdown runs by fullback Riley Gilbert and a line buck by halfback Fred Rhinelander sparked Eliot to a 20 to 6 win over Winthrop yesterday. Meanwhile, Leverett gained a 13 to 0 victory over undermanned Adams, as tailback Sam Paschal scored twice on off-tackle slashes.

Winthrop end Paul Rhodes pulled down a long pass from halfback Frank Hernberg to give the Puritans an early lead, but Gilbert then went 65 yards on the longest run of the game and tied the score. Rhinelander quickly followed with a 15-yard dash to the six-yard line, from where he plunged through guard for another tally.

Winthrop came close to scoring twice in the third quarter, but Cabot ended Dave Fines downfield sprint on the 16-yard line and Eliot recovered a fumble on the next play. In the fourth period, Rhinelander carried to the 19-yard line and Gilbert went around end to score.

Adams was quick to draw on its three substitutes in the first period when two injuries were sustained on the first two plays. Paschal smashed through tackle from the four-yard line to score the first touchdown in the second quarter.

Adams' only scoring threat came in the third period on a screen pass to quarterback Dave Andrews from fullback Kevin Riley. Andrews ran to the six-yard line, but a fumble on a bad pass from center ended this bid. Paschal then get away from four tacklers for a 50-yard touchdown run. Gallo made the point this time to close out the Bunny scoring.
