While the rest of the College was enjoying the Columbus Day holiday, the varsity football team went through a double workout in preparation for tomorrow's game with Cornell.
Because of the rain, Coach Lloyd Jordan took the squad into Briggs Cage for the morning practice, and most of the season was devoted to setting defenses for Cornell's T offense. Afterward came an offensive drill against dummies, which included some passing.
In the afternoon, Jordan divided his squad into offensive and defensive units which worked at their specialties at opposite ends of the field. Two changes in the offensive line put sophomore Hank Toepke and Duke Sedgwick at the tackle positions. Toepke replaces the injured Bob Stargel, while Sedgwick moves ahead of Nick Culolias.
Stargel Probably Out
Jordan revealed after practice that it is very doubtful that Stargel will see action tomorrow. He also said that wingback Dave Warden and guard Bill Rosenan will probably be called upon to play both offense and defense against the Big Red.
The first defensive team lineup had Dike Hyde and Hank Rate at ends; John Nichols and Art Connelly at tackles; and Rosenau and Dick Heidtmann at guards. Phil Isenberg and Buddy Lemay were the line-backers; Dusty Burke and Bob Ray played the halfbacks, and Warden was the safety man.
On offense, Jordan tried a number of different backfield combinations as the squad ran through its T and single-wing plays. One backfield had Isenberg at tailback, John West at fullback, Gil O'Neil at quarterback, and Warden at wingback.
Lowenstein at Tailback
The other combination had Carroll Lowenstein at tailback, Isenberg at quarterback, West at fullback, and Phil Campbell at right half. In the line were Fred Ravreby and Paul Crowley at ends, Sedgwick and Toepke at tackles, Rosenau and Kanter at guards, and Paul O'Brien at center.
End Stan Britton and tackle Arnie Horween, who missed the Columbia game because of injuries, joined in yesterday's drills and will be available tomorrow.
