Norm Shepard's jayvee football team, with two potential starters missing, will break away from its drudging role of varsity whetting stone this afternoon and engage Leicester Junior College in its opener at 2 p.m. on the freshman field near the Stadium.
In a late practice yesterday, Shepard ran his charges through a long drill on kickoff returns, the first time that line points beyond offensive and defensive scrimmaging have been stressed in a jayvee practice. The squad did not engage in the usual contact play with the varsity.
Hammy Shea's Maroon and Gold team from Worcester has practiced T and single-wing formations in preparation for a comeback against the Crimson. Traditionally weak in the first few contests, Shea's 1948 version was routed by the jayvees, 42 to 0.
Several Injuries
But the junior varsity has lost one of its top linemen in light, fast center Bill Monteith, who suffered a severe hip bruise in Wednesday's practice. Injured in the same scrimmage were dependable halfback John Ingraham, who broke a rib, and big fullback Bob Kendall, who bruised a leg. Kendall is expected to start, however.
Sophomore Erwin Venderlage will take over Monteith's position in a line consisting of flankers Fritz Drill (up with the varsity for a time) and George Mullen, tackles John Hickey and Stan Miller, and guards Joe Shaw and Si Bunce. Quarterback Bill Kierstead and wingbacks Lou Tsavaris and Bill Van Epps complete the starting backfield.
Kierstead was a standout quarterback on last year's freshman squad, he'll leave the passing to Hewie Finney this year.
