Two strong liberals, a conservative, and a staunch supporter of "The Vital Center" will open the fifth year of Law School Forums tonight with a discussion of "The Future of the American Liberal."
Beginning at 8 p.m. in Rindge Tech Auditorium, Norman Thomas, former leader of the Socialist Party, Ted O. Thackrey, New York newspaper publisher, Mayo A. Shattuck '19, Boston estates and trusts lawyer, and Arthur M. Schlesinger, Jr. '38, associate professor of History, will discuss the position of the liberal in today's society and give their varying views as to his ideal makeup.
Mark DeWolfe Howe '23, professor of Law, will moderate the program.
Thomas, "the perennial candidate for president," has run for office six times on the Socialist platform. Thackrey, new editor of the New York Compass, supported Henry Wallace's Progressive Party in 1948.
Shattuck is a partner in the firm of Hausermann, Davison, and Shattuck in Boston, and the author of several books on estate and trust administration Schlesinger published "The Vital Center" last year.
