Adams House, already well established as a leader in culinary matters, will begin another admirable contribution to intramural existence next Monday. For the duration of the reading and examination periods, on what is described as an "experimental basis," the House library will keep open until midnight.
This will be especially welcome just now, of course, but it looks like a good thing for whole year too. Some people go to bed at 11 or 11:30, and when they take a book from a House library, they read it for only half an hour or so before falling asleep. People who would be glad to read for a couple of hours more thus get no chance at the book. Under the Adams plan books would still be in the library for use after the early shift quits for the night. The new system would also provide a study room during the term for men whose roommates prefer to indulge in such sports as poker, reserving their strength for a stretch drive, and making their rooms unlikely places for study.
The Adams experiment looks like a good idea from every angle. All the Houses might well follow suit.
