Gene Desseau '53, who has been missing since Sunday morning, appeared in the Union Tuesday for a few fleeting seconds and then disappeared all over again, police were told last night.
An unidentified freshman reported he had seen Desseau in the Union Common Room after breakfast Tuesday, sleeping on a sofa next to a kit of toilet articles. Except for this, no one has seen Desseau since he left Stillman Sunday--not even his roommate or closest friends.
Sent to Stillman
The missing student is an 18-year-old freshman from Tacoma, Washington. He had been sent to Stillman Friday "to get some rest," after spending several weeks without studying or attending classes. Friends said Desseau had been "depressed" since Christmas vacation.
On Sunday morning he told doctors he wanted to study, and left the Infirmary with some toilet articles and a German text. When he failed to appear at his room for several days, the Dean's Office called in the police.
New England Alarm
New England alarm and teletype descriptions have so far failed to find Desseau. Police last night speculated that he might be suffering from amnesia, after hearing about the Tuesday morning incident in the Union.
Desseau's friends said he was a likeable but quiet student. Since October, they said, he has been staying away from his Hollis Hall room every night, returning sometimes as late as 4 a.m.
According to police, Dessau, who is here on a scholarship, was continually worried about finances and final exams. He had "quite good" marks so far this term, his friends stated. The University has placed the entire case in the hands of the police.
