Publication of "salacious material" in the Daily Princetonian has led to the probation of Peter D. Bunzel, chairman of Princeton's daily paper, and another member of the Editorial Board.
Probation at Princeton entails discontinuance of a student's extra-curricular activities, and also immediate loss of any scholarships. Officers of the Princetonian said that one of the disciplined men had a "large scholarship."
"Private Lives"
The stories under fire appeared in "Private Lives," a semi-weekly gossip column, on December 14. On January 10 the notice of probation was printed on the front page of the paper.
The two reprimanded students will remain on probation at least until early March, when the Discipline Committee, composed of three faculty members and three undergraduates, will review the case.
The "salacious material" consisted of three items, reprinted--except for the deletion of names--except for the deletion of names--exactly as they were given to the CRIMSON by the editors of the Princetonian:
The Quote
"It was proved statistically in Professor S---'s Philosophy course that the American woman is a bitch.... Professor M--- reports that one night he was walking down Prospect Street (home of Princeton's social clubs) on a house party weekend. He noticed a boy and girl walking arm in arm, and overheard the male remark to his date, 'Don't you know that virginity is the most bizarre form of sexual perversion known to man?'"
A third story was also termed salacious by Dean Francis R.B. Godolphin.
