If it hadn't been quite so much like a football game Saturday night at West Point, the varsity hockey team might not have been rudely upset--and injured--by Army in a 7 to 6 overtime game.
Both Myles Huntington and Dave Abbot were carried off the ice early in the game, and their departure sparked the Cadets into a showy late-game display of power. The winning goal came at 6:10 of a violent sudden death overtime period.
Neither Huntington nor Abbot are sure starters for the varsity in the Arena tonight against Northeastern.
Saturday against the Cadets the Crimson picked up a quick 2 to 0 first period lead and protected it through the second period. But midway in the opening stanza Huntington accidentally landed hard in a scramble for the puck and broke his nose. And in the second period an Army high stick gave Abbott a deep vein cut under the eyebrow.
As for the actual play Saturday, the Crimson sextet was never the same after the first period. Harvard outshot the Cadets, but with both Huntington and Abbot gone there was little coordination or poise in the effort. And Army's goalie Bob Harris got better as the game were on.
Chase Replaced
In the second period, moreover, with the score 2 to 0 Harvard, Godfrey Howard replaced Johnny Chase in the goal for the Crimson. Before Chase returned early in the third period, Army had scored four of its seven goals.
There were three consecutive unassisted Army goals (five of the Cadet tallies were scored in this fashion), and it took a Harvard goal by Joe Kittredge at 18:47 to tie up the game and force the overtime.
Tonight's Northeastern game won't be especially simple. The Crimson has now lost four straight, and the Huskies, although they don't win often, have a habit of playing well against the better teams they meet. Game time is 7 p.m.
The summaries Saturday:
Harvard goals: Minot, Preston, Di Blasio, Kittredge, Garrity, Marshall.
