Harvard's and Brown's varsity and freshman teams are going to provide some very good wrestling in the Blockhouse tonight. Unfortunately, their matches are being held simultaneously, starting at 7:45 p.m., so you can safely watch only one at a time.
The men from Providence are expected to give both Crimson teams, successful in their openers against MIT last month, their first real tests of the season. Brown's varsity has tied strong Army and Amherst squads and beaten Tufts.
Coach Butch Jordan will present a more powerful lineup than the one that overwhelmed MIT. Four men (Charlie Keith, Dave Smith, Al Sawyer, Bob Claflin) have sweated down to a lower weight division, where they should be more effective, and two new faces will appear in Jordan's lineup.
Injuries will force Jordan to use replacements at the heavyweight post where he had planned to use Howie Houston and at at 155, Tom Connors' usual slot.
Either Will Davis, a strong and capable wrestler, or Elmer Johanson, a sophomore with limited experience, will go in at heavyweight. Davis is the better but Jordan hesitates to use him for fear Davis will aggravate a football-incurred broken nose.
Buddy King will probably compete at 155. He is being graduated next month, had a mediocre season last year. Roger Wach may wrestle instead but, like Connors, he is not in perfect shape.
Whoever gets the nod at heavyweight will have his hands full with John Chernak, a rugged football guard whose pin of the Army heavy last Saturday gained Brown a tie.
The 136-pound bout, pitting Dave Smith against Bruin captain Gray Michaels should be another match well worth watching. Last year, Michaels went down to 128 just so he could face Smith, who went up to 136 for that match.
