Harian Philip Manson '46 has been appointed assistant Dean of the College for the academic year 1949-1950, Dean Bender announced yesterday.
Hanson graduated summa cum laude last year. He is currently abroad on a Shaw Travelling Fellowship.
During his senior year at College, Hanson was captain of the jayvee crew. He hails from Madison, Wisconsin.
The new dean will help fill the gap left by the retirement of Assistant Deans Norman Harrower, Jr.; Robert W. Sides '38, and Judson T. Shaplin '41.
Harrower to Okishoma
Harrower is leaving for a job in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, while Sides will return to a teaching position at Phillips Andover Academy. Both Harrower and Sides worked with upperclassmen.
Shaplin, who was assistant dean of freshmen, has been made Registrar of the Graduate School of Education.
According to Dean Bender, the assistant deans' resignations are not unusual, representing merely normal turnover in the Dean's Office. An assistant dean is appointed annually, he explained, and usually holds the job for from two to four years.
At the time the assistant deans' resignations were disclosed, Bender said that only one new upperclass, dean would be appointed to fill, the two vacancies, the decrease in deans corresponding to the drop in enrollment.
