David E. Lilienthal, Chairman of the Atomic Energy Commission, will be the main speaker at the annual literary exercises of Harvard Chapter Phi Beta Kappa at 11 a.m. Monday, June 20 in Sanders Theater. The exercises are open to the public.
Karl Shapiro, as official poet for the event, will read an original poem entitled "Going to School." Shapiro is a well known modern poet.
Lilienthal, who studied at the Law School and received his LL.D. there in 1923, plans to speak on "Freedom in a World of Fears."
The AEC chairman graduated from DePauw University in 1920, where he received an honorary Doctorate of Laws in 1945, and practiced law in Tennessee, Chicago, and Wisconsin before being appointed a director of the Tennessee Valley Authority in 1933.
He served as chairman of the TVA until 1946, when President Truman appointed him to his present post. His appointment was confirmed by the Senate in April., 1947.
PBK Member
A Phi Beta Kappa member, Lilienthal is the author of "TVA: Democracy on the March," published in 1944.
Although he definitely plans to come to the exercises, there is a possibility that the current Joint Committee hearings on his management of AEC may prevent him from making the trip from Washington.
The Phi Beta Kappa chapter is discussing choice of an alternate Orator if Lilienthal cannot appear.
Shapiro is especially noted for his "An Essay on Rime," a criticism in verse, which he wrote while on a Pacific Island during his four years in the armed services in World War II.
