Paul Hindemith will become Charles Eliot Norton Professor of Music during the year of 1949-50, Provost Buck announced yesterday. Currently he is Battell professor of the Theory of Music at Yale.
As the University's Norton Professor, Hindemith will deliver six lectures next year. In addition, it is expected that he will offer a course in the Department of Music.
Many Concert Tours
During the last 12 years he has been touring the United States giving concerts of his own works and performing with most of the leading American symphony orchestras. He also taught at the Berkshire Academy at Stockbridge before going to Yale.
Besides Hindemith's numerous compositions for all combinations of voices and instruments he is the author of several books on the theory of music.
Among his works is his "Apparebit Repentina Dies" for chorus and brass which was commissioned by the Harvard Music Department. It was performed by the Collegiate Chorale of New York under Robert Shaw's direction in 1947.
His works first attracted critical attention in the 1920s.
