Hurdler Pat McCormick and weightman Jeff Tootell won two events each for the third straight week Saturday in the Stadium to help Jaskko Mikkola's varsity track team wallop Holy Cross, BU, and Northeastern.
The Crimson grabbed 74 1/2, points, 28 of them in the shot, discus, and hammer, Holy Cross had 42 1/3, and BU and Northeastern trailed with 36 and 21.
Results Unimpressive
Although his team took seven firsts and scored in all but two of the 16 events, Mikkola was disappointed in some of the performances. "We got most of the points in the weights," he said, "but the distances, especially in the discus, weren't too good--we will have to improve for the Dartmouth meet this Saturday."
High point men for the Crimson in Saturday's quadrangular meet were McCermick, who took both hurdle events, and Tootell, winner of the shot and discus. Holy Cross' sprinter Bill Gould was the only other double-winner of the day, getting home first in the 100 and 220. His times of 9.8 and 21.3 were the highlights of the meet.
Spivak Breaks 10 Seconds
Coach Mikkola was pleased with Jon Spivak's showing against Gould in the 100. Spivak finished second, running his trial heat in 10.1 and the final in 9.9 This is the first time that a Harvard sprinter has broken 10 seconds since Dough Pirnie was running back in 1942.
Mikkola also thought Hank Everett ran a good race in the two mile. Everett, a sophomore, covered the distance in 10:11, which was good enough for third place.
In the 440, Harvey Thayer went to the front early and staved there until Charles lunged ahead to win in 49.9. Thayer later teamed with Al Ruby, Joe Walsh and Bert Brown to win the mile relay. Captain Dave Hamblett sat out this race and the mile because of a bad cold.
Harvard winners, in addition to McCormick and Tootell, were Bill Lawrence in the pole vault, and hammer thrower Bob Forsyth. Gene Harrigan wound up in a three-way tie for first in the high jump.
