Freshman lacrosse players, led by newly elected Captain Bill Spence, beat down the hard-fighting Governor Dummer squad 7 to 5 yesterday at the Academy's home grounds at South Byfield.
The Crimson led at the end of the first period 3 to 1, and then dropped two points to the opposition, while making none for themselves. This 3 to 3 tie became 4 to 4 after the third period, and then the Yardlings scored three more while allowing only one for the Dummers.
Defenseman Spence scored no goals, of course, but he was acclaimed as a great help in holding down the prep-squad to one point in each quarter, except the second. Spence has started every game this season.
There was no lack of organization, fight, or ability in the Governor Dummer team. The Crimson just won, and then by a bare hair. If credits should go to any one player it would go to big attack player Ned Yost and his huge stick. Yost plays crease, and he ran up his four point score with his defenseman's stick, which is longer than normal for an attack player. Yost catches the ball high in the air and uses his extra leverage to slam the ball into the net with a speed most opposing defensemen decry.
Coach Dick Merryman played 18 men today. Substituting for Yost, Schaffer, and Baldwin during part of the game were George Bender and Fritz Delafield Midfield players included Rip Lynch, Al Sawyer, Brooke, Osborne, Dick Edelman, Mike Park, and George Otis. At defense were Willie Bryne, Spence, Ned Maroni, Godfrey Brickhead, and Tom Brager.
