One of the country's distinguished maritime and naval historians has just been appointed to a newly established chair to be known as the Gardiner Professorship of Oceanic History and Affairs. The University announced Saturday the establishment of the chair and its first holder, Robert G. Albion, visiting professor on Oceanic History from Princeton.
This year Professor Albion has taught the Maritime History of the United States. He is the author of many books, including "Forests and Sea Power," "The Rise of the New York Port," and "Sea Lanes in Wartime." He has been on the Princeton faculty since 1922.
U. S. Security Studied
Purpose of the new professorship is the "study and teaching of history and geography of the sea and ocean areas of the earth and their affect on commerce, communication, and the spread of culture." Emphasis will be placed on the study of security and progress of the United States in view of the mid-oceanic and insular position of North America relative to other lands.
The new professorship was made possible by a bequest of the late Mrs. Mary McBurney Gardiner of New York. The gift was from the estate of her husband, William Howard Gardiner, which she held for her life tenancy.
