Tennis Varsity Is Favored To Defeat BC Here Today

The varsity tennis team is favored to whip Boston University when its makes its 1949 home debut at 3:45 p.m. this afternoon on the Soldiers Field tennis courts.

Despite its comparative lack of experience, the Crimson squad will have the benefit of its recent three-game southern tour. During that rip the team bowed to mighty North Carolina and then tied Navy and best Army.

New Lineup

Coach Jack Barnaby has juggled his lineup a bit since the end of the vacation trip. Billiard Hughes, formerly number five man, will move up to number four on the basis of his victories in the Army and Navy matches. Jack Frey drops down to Hughes' old number five position.

In another change Jay Robb will replace Howie Swartzman at number six. A heavy academic schedule will keep Swarizman out of the lineup until early May. The three top men Bud Ager, Captain Tod Bullard, and Charley Ames--remain unaffected.

Doubles Experiement

Barnaby is still experimenting with his doubles personnel. This afternoon he will probably try Ager and Bullard, Ames and Hughes, and Robb and Dave Key. Key captained the varsity hockey team during the winter and recently joined the tennis squad.

Here are the individual won-and-lost records for the three game southern tour: Ager, 1 and 2: Bullard, 1 and 2; Ames, 1 and 2; Hughes 2 and 1; Frey, 0 and 3; Swartzman, 2 and 1; Robb, 0 and 0.

Also Faces Terriers

After shifting the lineup in a few places, Corey Wynn is now ready to start the Yardling tennis squad against Boston University this afternoon at 3:45 p.m. on the Soldiers Field courts.

The lineup for the encounter will include Don Blackmer, Gerry Murphy, Dave Aldrich, Charlie Thompson, Jack Fairclothe, and John Leob, playing singles matches in that order. Murphy and Chase Peterson, Thompson and Wooster Wood, and Bob Swanson and Pote Bien will make up the doubles combinations.

Wynn claimed that the team is shaping up nicely and should do well this afternoon.

Like the Varsity this will be the first home match for the team. According to Wynn it will be played against a completely unknown opposition as he doesn't know whether the BU freshmen have played before or not.
