Button, Ulen Win Special Major H's In Unusual Award

Swimming coach Harold Ulen and World Figue Skating Champion Richard Button '52 were awarded special major letters yesterday by the Harvard Committee on the Regulation of Athletic Sports, Athletic Director William J. Bingham '16 announced last night.

Button First Undergraduate Winner

Button, a nineteen-year-old freshman, became the first undergraduate in Crimson history to receive a special award, although Bobby Jones '24 received a special Golf "H" in 1924 when he won the National Open Golf Championships. Button recently returned from Paris where he retained the world figure skating title.

Ulen Surprised by Award

When Bingham made the award to Hal Ulen at the Blockhouse pool this afternoon, the 58-year-old swimming coach was completely taken by surprise. After a moment of dazzled silence, Ulen announced to the assembled varsity and freshman squads, "Well, we'll do those sprints anyway."

Ulen became the fifth coach in the history of the University to win the honorary "H." Ex-football coach, Dick Harlow, rowing coaches Tom Bolles and Burt Haines, and track coach Jaakko Mikkola also hold the special award.

Since he came to Harvard in 1929, Ulen's teams have won 135 meets against 35 setbacks.
