Fencing Squad Gets Ninth Place in IFA Tournament

Varsity fencers took ninth place in a 13-team field at the annual Intercollegiate Fencing Association championships in New York this weekend.

The swordsmen made poor showings through the whole meet, taking 46 points out of a possible 108. Only two of the team, John Ager at opee and Fels Carter at saber, managed to win more games than they lost.

NYU Wins

New York University won the three weapon title with 80 points. The Violets also tied with City College in fells, and thus took a half share in the Little Iron Man trophy, the oldest active award in college athletics.

Navy, undefeated in fencing this year, took second place with 72 points. City College, the defending champions, scored 68 points and placed third.

The remaining standings were Army, Rutgers, Princeton Yale, Columbia, Harvard, MIT, Cornell, Penn State, and Pennsylvania.

Squad Eliminated

The Crimson won 14 epee duels and lost 22, won 16 matches and lost 20 in foils, and won 16 and lost 20 in saber. No one on the squad did well enough in team competition to be eligible for the individual championships Saturday evening.
