The salesman is coming into his own once again, Owen Brown, vice-president and general sales manager of Godfrey L. Cabot, Inc., said last night at the third forum on business careers. The subject of the forum was "Business--Sales."
Other speakers were Frederick G. Atkinson, director of personnel and industrial relations for R. H. Macy and Co., and Amor Hollingsworth, Jr. '31, president of Tileston and Hollingsworth.
"Fair-Haired Boys"
In recent years, the production men were the "fair haired boys" in business. Brown said. Because of shortages, products tended to sell themselves. But post-war competition is regenerating the salesman's position, he said.
Requirements for salesmanship are (1) a thorough knowledge of one's product, (2) a liberal arts education and (3) a good wife, Brown declared.
Hollingsworth drow hisses from the crowd by stating plainly that "Knowing the right people doesn't hurt any either."
