Yardling Quintet Beats Yale, 56-55, In Overtime Play

In the last 10 seconds of a five minute overtime period, Jim Downey sank a driving layup shot to clinch a 56 to 55 victory for the freshman basketball team over Yale. The hair-raising finish was typical of the game in which neither team ever had more than a five point lead.

Less than a moment before, John Stevenson had stolen the ball from Yale's John Roche and pitched in a one handed shot to put his team ahead 54 to 53. Then Yale took a 55 to 54 lead with about 40 seconds to go and until Downey's eleventh hour shot it looked like Yale would take the see-saw battle.

Captain Bill Hickey led his team on the floor and in scoring with 15 points. Jerry Murphy played all but the first four minutes of the game despite his recent injury, scored 10 points, and was invaluable on defense in that he contained Ed McHugh, Yale's ace, who nevertheless managed to accumulate 16 points.
