The success of American aid to Europe is helping to "disintegrate" the Soviet bloc of satellites, Arthur M. Schlesinger, Jr. '38, associate professor of History, told an informal forum of Liberal Union members last night.
Speaking about the proposed North Atlantic Pact, he said that the current European situation was similar to the one in 1939. The Allies might have prevented a war then by standing up to Nazi aggression. In the same way the United States can now avoid a conflict by not buckling before Russia.
If America shows that it intends to support Europe against Russia, such action will "put the brakes" on the Politburo, he asserted.
Schlesinger went on to argue that the United States should not force Holland to set Indonesia free because that colony provides many commodities vital to European recovery.
