Twenty-two men moved up a step in the University hierarchy February 1, the President and Fellows of the College announced last week. Consent for the appointments came from the Board of Overseers January 10.
George F. Bennett '33 took over as Deputy Treasurer after 15 years in the investment business. He is a partner in the State Street Research and Management Company and vice-president of the State Street Investment Corporation.
The 21 term appointments include only one new associate professorship. William M. Schmidt received an associate professorship of maternal and Child Health Practice. Since 1948 he has been medical adviser to the European Executive Council of the American Joint Distribution Committee, France.
Robert G. McCloskey Arthur A. Maass, and Daniel S. Cheever '39 became assistant professors in Government and tutors in the Department of Government. All three have been instructors in the department since 1948.
Richard D. Buck '27 assumed the post of Conservator of the William Hayes Fogg Art Museum, but immediately took a leave of absence to the London Museum. John E. Sawyer, junior follow of the University for the last two years, was appointed assistant professor of General Education and Economics.
New assistant professors in science and medicine include Laugdon Parsons in Gynaecology, Dwight E. Harken '31 in Surgery, Benjamin Castleman'27 in Pathology at the Massachusetts General Hospital, Charles R. Williams in Industrial Hygiene, Alfred L. Freechette in Public Health Practice, John R. Pappenheimer '36 in Physiology, and Walter L Hughes in Physiology Chemistry.
Eight new associates were also appointed in science and medicine. They are : Harry L. Kozol '27, Somers H. Sturgis '27, Alexander S. Macmillan, William A. Meissner, Samuel P. Hicks Don W. Fawcett '38, Douglas M. Surgenor, and Avram S. Goldstein '40.
