Fives, Squash Teams See Action; 6 More Sports Begin Soon

NO WRITER ATTRIBUTED

Squash players took the lead yesterday in stirring up inter-House athletic rivalry again after the exam period truce, while League A basketball resumes today. Hockey and League B basketball begin tomorrow.

Adams and Winthrop basketball squads square off at 5 p.m. today to reopen the A League competition. The other A teams start tomorrow with Kirkland playing Dudley at 2 p.m., Dunster playing Leverett at 7 p.m., and Lowell playing Eliot at 8 p.m. All League A games are on court two of the Indoor Athletic Building.

The B quintets catch up with the A League schedule by playing four games tomorrow. Adams plays Winthrop and Kirkland plays Dudley at 2 p.m., Dunster plays Leverett at 7 p.m., and Lowell plays Winthrop at 8 p.m.

In the only House hockey contest this week, Dunster opposes Dudley at 7:30 a.m. tomorrow morning at the Boston Skating Club.

Squash Keeps Going

While A League squash players take a holiday today after yesterday's early start, the B League keeps right on going with a match between Kirkland and Eliot. Matches between Adams and Lowell, Eliot and Kirkland, and Dunster and Winthrop are scheduled in both A and B Leagues tomorrow.

The pace of House competition is slated for an additional step-up next month with contests in swimming, volleyball, boxing, wrestling, and fencing. Four multi-House swimming meets are on the agenda and a full schedule for volleyball squads is drawn up. Boxing, wrestling, and fencing competition will be in tournament form.

So far this winter Lowell has the flashiest athletic record. Unbeaten Bellboy teams hold first place in both the A basketball league and the A squash league. But in League B basketball Lowell's cellar team isn't even a threat, while the Deacon squad is on top with a record of no defeats.

Winthrop leads the hockey competition, while Eliot is ahead in the B squash league.

Freshman Action

Although basketball is now the only intramural sport for Yardlings, the Freshman Athletic Council has competition planned in six additional sports for next month.

Trial events in boxing will be staged March 7, 8, and 9, with the finals in all events March 10. The weight classes are; 125, 130, 135, 145, 155, 165, 175, and unlimited.

Wrestling trials are scheduled for March 14 and 15, with the finals marked down for the 16th. The weight classes here are: 121, 128, 136, 145, 155, 165, 175, 191, and unlimited.

There will be no trial matches in fencing. Three events, foils, sabre, and cpeo, are slated for late in March.

Swimming time trials begin March 22, with the finals March 24. Open events are: 50, 100, and 200-yard freestyle; 50-yard breaststroke; 200-yard freestyle relay; 150-yard modley relay; and dive.

Individual tournaments in squash begin Wednesday, February 23 for each dormitory. Team competition begins March 14 for the top men in each hall.

Freshmen who want to enter these sports should register with their Hall athletic managers before Thursday.
