Crimson trackmen placed last in a triangular meet at West Point, Saturday, that included Army and Princeton as the two, other participants. Army literally ran away with the contest. It took first place in 10 of 13 events and accumulator 75 points as against Princeton's 31 and Harvard's 30.
Harvey Thayer gathered Harvard's only first by winning the 600-yard run with a time of 1:14.5. 'He ran a good race," track coach Jaakko Mikkola remarked, "the only trouble was that he was very tired for later events."
Army Team is Strong
Mikkola was pleased with his team's performance despite their loss. "Army is one of the strongest Ivy League teams," he said. "The boys did well in the dashes and I can tell you they're a coming team."
Shot putter Don Trimble, Hank Rood, 35-pound weight thrower, and the mile relay team composed of Dave Hamblett, A1 Ruby, Harvey Thayer, and Chuck Harwood all placed second. Pat McCormick, John Harrigan, and Arthur Lockett and Bill Lawrence took thirds in the 60-yard hurdles, high jump, and pole vault respectively. Fourth place went to John Cogan in the mile, Chuck Harwood in the 60-yard dash, George Williamson in the 1000-yard run, and Don Carter in the broadjump.
Freshmen Beat Andover
Freshmen runners were more successful. They beat Andover 62-37 and picked up nine of a possible 11 first places. 52 track and field men won in the 40-yard dash, the 300-yard dash, the 60-yard run, the 1000-yard run, the shot put, the weight throw, the broad jump, the high jump and the discuss throw.
In spite of its impressive victory, Mikkola is still worried about the freshman team's lack of manpower. "We need high jumpers, hurdlers, pole vaulters and shot putters. Sometimes our opposition automatically gets second and third because we only have one man to enter in an event. We can still use beginners," Mikola concluded.
