The staunchly-Republican Hasty Pudding Club has thrown in the sponge politically.
For the second year in a row, it has named a Democrat as it Woman of the Year.
This year the girl is Miss Sharman Douglas, daughter of the U.S. Ambassador to the Court of St. James; last year when the stunt was inaugurated, Miss Margaret Truman was named.
"The trouble," one student said last night, "is that Republicans leaders don't have big enough families. Tom Dewey doesn't even have one daughter. Maybe Governor Warren's daughter should have been picked."
