Soccer Team Plays Cornell at Noon

Crimson Is Underdog But Thinks It Can Beat Ivy Champions

By Douglas M. Fouquet

It will only be the Crimson's second game of the season but soccer Coach Bruce Munro calls today's contest with defending Ivy champion Cornell the "crucial" one.

"Crucial" that is, because "it will mean the difference between a fair season and a terriffic season for us," Munro explains. His booters, who beat Tufts 4 to 1 with case last Saturday, have looked even better all this week in practice. As a result the Cayugans paper advantage of experience doesn't particularly faze Munro.

Because Cornell is the champion and boasts eight letterman starters to the Crimson's six, the Big Red will be the favorite when the teams kick off at noon on the Business School Field. But Munro thinks the following factors may spoil upset:

(1) The game will be the Cayugans opener and besides they'll be on strange ground.

(2) Last year's Crimson tied champion Cornell, 3 to 3, away at Ithaca.

(3) Today Harvard should be considerably improved over last week. Not only is the team running faster, kicking better, and passing better, but almost everyone is off the injury list.

Veteran fullback Mike Scully will make his season debut, having sat out last week's game to allow his pre-season practice injury an extra week to mend. Scully's appearance at fullback will send Dick Harrop back to his natural position of halfback.

Right wing Ben Goldstein, who played last week despite his leg injury, seemed fully fit at practice yesterday. But inside left Charlie Weiss remains a doubtful starter. If Weiss can't play, Ted Wolf, who scored one of last week's four goals, will take as place.
