Student car owners will be given ten days to find garage space before the Cambridge police will crack down on all-night parking, Captain Patrick J. McCarthy, acting Chief of Police, announced last Saturday.
"I know its tough to find space," Captain McCarthy said, "so I'll give them a little time, but those streets have to be clear at night." He particularly mentioned the streets adjoining Mt. Auburn
Streets are Fire Hazard
The acting Chief said that the crowded streets are a definite fire hazard. Numerous complaints were received last year, he said, from truck owners who could not maneuvre around Mill Street.
For this reason, the police will also tag cars during the day that are parked on the wrong side of streets allowing parking on only one side. But police will be "doubly hard" on night parking. Captain McCarthy promised.
The Fire Department stated that as long as signs for daytime parking are followed, they can get through.
Cars Towed Away
This procedure on parking is a repetition of last fall's action, which saw numerous cars towed away from their illegal spots to the Elbery Garage.
Parking problems are not restricted to Cambridge, for Yale University is facing a similar plight. Reports say that about 600 spaces are available for an estimated 2000 cars. Now Haven police are threatening to enforce parking laws strongly "to prevent theft."
